Upcoming Event
October 23-24, 2026
Join OEEC and Saint Joseph’s University for the 2026 Thriving Communities Symposium. The two-day event will bring together people working across Philadelphia and the region to share ideas and practical approaches around climate resilience, land use, illegal dumping, air and water quality, environmental health, funding, and more. The symposium will also feature workshops, a resource fair, an EcoZone bus tour, and an awards dinner.
Who We Are
OEEC is a nationally recognized institution with nearly 30 years of experience, founded by Jerome and Gloria Shabazz. To this day, we are dedicated to advancing environmental justice, sustainable living, and public health in the Philadelphia area. Our programs bring people, partners, and professional expertise together to improve neighborhoods and break systemic barriers for individuals, families, and communities.
Our Impact
Proudly serving as Philadelphia’s only ultra-urban environmental center, OEEC is known for reliability and authenticity. We have transformed abandoned spaces into urban green oases and are home to one of the city’s first commercially installed passive stormwater collection systems. We continue to provide helpful programs and resources with the support of our partners.

PHL TCTAC
The PHL TCTAC Program is based on the EPA’s “Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers” Program. This supports nonprofit organizations and local jurisdictions in building capacity to advance environmental justice work (ex. strategic planning, grant support). Rooted in a long-standing partnership history, OEEC continues this work in the Philadelphia region by providing practical, community-focused guidance and resources to strengthen impact and foster thriving communities.
